White Paper: Maryland Alternatives to Additional Gas-fired Generation to Meet Expected Electricity Load Growth

In February 2025, the Center for Climate Strategies provided the Maryland legislature a comprehensive high-level review of power system load forecasts and supply and demand response options in response to concerns about high energy bills during winter months. This includes review of the efficacy of two bills intended to address state power system needs (HB1035 and SB937). The white paper addresses specific issues related to data centers and Artificial Intelligence (AI) electricity demand growth and technology shift as they affect Maryland’s current and future needs.
